WooWeekly #604: Redesigning My WooCommerce Site… in Production

Happy Wednesday!

Personally, I’ve been playing a lot of tennis lately, but not nearly as much beach time as I had imagined. The main reason is that my son is currently rejecting the beach altogether, and I don’t always have the energy to negotiate, persuade, and come up with creative reasons why it’s actually a good idea. So I’m letting a few days pass and seeing if he changes his mind (he’s 5, so his mood changes often!). It’s a bit ironic considering we’re literally living by the beach, but I suspect the heat has a lot to do with it. For now, I’ll be aiming for evening visits instead, when it’s cooler, quieter, and honestly much more enjoyable.

Business-wise, hello from my summer office! After more than three weeks of working a few minutes away from it, I finally made the move and set myself up in our second apartment to get some proper work done, alone. And today’s task is quite a significant one: after more than 10 years on Storefront, I’m attempting to switch the theme on my own website. And yes, before you ask—there won’t be a block theme involved. Not this time.

Forget Staging. I’m Redesigning My WooCommerce Site in Production. Live.

For months, one task has kept resurfacing on my to-do list: redesigning my website with a new theme, and moving away from years of accumulated customizations. Every time I looked at it, the same problem appeared: it felt too big, too risky, too time-consuming to fit into the few focused hours I have available each week.

So, yes, I’m going to redesign my website in production, and forget about staging for once. I’ll document every step publicly, share the wins, the mistakes, and the unexpected challenges, and invite you to help shape the next version of my website in real time.

Call for testing: Shopper Lists in WooCommerce

WooCommerce 10.9 introduces two experimental shopper-list features for logged-in shoppers: Save for Later and Wishlists.

Both features are opt-in and off by default. These shopping lists are designed for stores using WooCommerce’s block-based shopping experience, and they give logged-in shoppers a first-party way to keep products around between sessions instead of choosing between buying immediately, removing an item, or leaving the store.

We are looking for feedback from developers, agencies, and store builders who can test these flows on real store setups before the features move toward a wider rollout.

Rental Bundles for WooCommerce: Hire out complete kits as one bookable product

If you run a rental store on WooCommerce, you already know the problem. Customers rarely want to rent just one item. They need complete setups, which is where WooCommerce rental bundles make all the difference. The photographer needs a camera, a lens, a tripod, and a bag. The event planner needs tables, chairs, and a marquee. The DIY customer needs the whole tool kit, not just a single drill.

You could list those items separately and hope the customer assembles the right set. But then you’re the one stuck checking, by hand, whether every single piece is free on the same dates. Miss one, and you’ve got an awkward email and a double-booking.
