WooWeekly #615: Save the Plugin, Purple theme, Order bump

Happy Wednesday!

This week has been a lot. School, the city, work, meetings, calls, and I’m back to full time now, all landing at once. I’m counting down to the weekend and hoping for a quiet one, because I could use it.

On the business side, I’ve been pulling in a lot of directions lately, maybe too many. The first post below is where most of my energy has gone in the last 5 days: it’s my latest product, so go read that one first. Everything else is getting reworked too: plugins, the conferences, the community, you name it.

WooCommerce Devs Aren’t Marketers, and That’s the Problem

AI has made shipping a WooCommerce plugin easier than it’s ever been. Which means the part that was always the hard part, actually getting people to buy it, is now the only part left standing.

Most WooCommerce developers (including me!) aren’t bad at marketing, they just never find a reason or the time to sit down and get it done: the demo video that’s been on the to-do list for months, that partnership proposal you keep postponing, or that review you meant to ask a happy customer for.

So, I built something 🙂

The Modern WooCommerce PR Workflow (with James Kemp)

After my first (rather messy) attempt at contributing to WooCommerce Core, it’s time to do things properly. In this live session, James Kemp will guide me through the entire process of building and submitting a real WooCommerce Pull Request—from planning the change to coding, testing, AI, code review, and the final submission. If you’ve ever wanted to contribute to WooCommerce but didn’t know where to start, this is the workflow you’ll want to see.

Join us on September 24, 2026 (10AM NY | 3PM UK | 7:30PM India) for Business Bloomer Club’s first post-summer live class!

Rebuilding Sales by State on “Purple” WooCommerce Block Theme

sales·by·state has run on a theme I built from scratch via WordPress Studio since the start. Every header change, every section, was a quick prompt inside Studio’s UI.

Today we moved the site to Purple, WooCommerce’s own block theme. Purple, Woo’s first official block theme, is ready for beta testing, so I thought this was the perfect way to give it a go and send them some feedback as well!

Here’s what it took to make the Purple theme actually look like us, and what changed.

Call for testing: Purple, a WooCommerce block theme

WooCommerce has spent the last few years investing heavily in the block editing experience for merchants and developers. The only thing missing was an official block theme we could recommend, built specifically for Woo.

Purple, our first official block theme, is back and ready for beta testing. For now, you can access Purple directly on GitHub or view a preview site. After this initial round of testing and feedback, Purple will be made available in the WordPress Theme Directory and the WooCommerce Marketplace for easier automatic updates.

How to Price Custom Products in WooCommerce: Engraving, Dimensions and Artwork

Shoppers love buying something that feels made for them. You find it in a necklace engraved with a name, or a blind cut to fit a window. The same idea applies to a photo printed on canvas, or even a present that arrives gift wrapped. They’re happy to pay extra for a custom product.

However, WooCommerce gives each product one price, or one price per variation. It has no built-in way to charge for choices on custom products, like engraving, measurements, artwork, or gift wrap. Charging fairly also takes thought, because engraving one initial is a smaller job than engraving a full message.

WooCommerce Order Bump: Add A One-Click Checkout Upsell

Most store owners hear “order bump” and assume they need a dedicated funnel plugin. If you already use Advanced Coupons Premium, you can build a similar checkout offer with coupon features you may already have.

A WooCommerce order bump can help increase average order value by offering a small, related add-on to someone who has already decided to buy. The key is making the offer easy to understand and showing it only when it makes sense.

How CartRules Sells Plugins With Kestrel’s License Manager + Constellation

CartRules is the newest thing I’m building: a spin-off of Business Bloomer focused entirely on one niche: WooCommerce… cart rules (you saw it coming!).

Being brand new, every decision about how it runs is still being made from scratch, including how the premium plugins get delivered and get sold. For CartRules One in Cart PRO, and every plugin that follows it, I needed a stack that solved both.
