WooWeekly #251: Bulk Edit, Disable Related Products, SEO Tips

How you doing today?

It’s Wednesday, which means our WooCommerce Weekly newsletter is back; here comes a series of WooCommerce tutorials, tips, reviews and workarounds put together by yours truly so that you can learn something new. You’ll also find a “What I’m working on this week” update and a brand new “SEO Tip of the Week” section.

WooCommerce: Add Custom Field to “Bulk Actions” “Edit”

As you know, one of the product bulk edit methods comes with WooCommerce out of the box. It can be found under “WP Dashboard” > “Products” > “Bulk Actions” > “Edit”. Thankfully, WooCommerce gives us a “hook” we can use to display the input in the bulk edit form. Easy as pie! Just copy & paste into your functions.php. Enjoy:

WooCommerce: Checkbox to Disable Related Products Conditionally

Here’s how you can display a “checkbox” in the product edit page in order to hide the Related Products section in case this is checked. I’ve coded this in 15 minutes for a client so why not sharing it with you too? Here’s the full snippet, enjoy:

Answer Questions to Get Featured in… “Featured Snippets”

Today’s tip is about selecting and writing low effort but maximal exposure content to rank higher on Google.

Google says: “When a user asks a question in Google Search, we might show a search result in a special featured snippet block at the top of the search results page. This featured snippet block includes a summary of the answer, extracted from a webpage, plus a link to the page, the page title and URL”.

Below I outline a simple procedure that helped me gain numerous “position 0” results (i.e. above the first Google result), and increased my sites’ traffic.

0. Use this process for keywords that already rank on the first page of Google

1. Structure your page with H2, H3, H4 headings (also use ordered lists and bullet points)

2. Answer the query in the first two sentences of the paragraph with a clear statement

3. Select Questions that require a more complex answer, so readers will click on your site

Let us know what you think and, even better, if you manage to reach “position 0” with one of your blog posts!

New: “What I’m Working on This Week”

  • It’s been 2 weeks since I started “blocking” the first hour of each working day – so that I don’t open emails first thing in the morning but instead focus on my own projects.
  • A little update on my “pen & paper weekends”. Last weekend my other half and I enjoyed a nice family dinner on Saturday and a lovely picnic on the beach on Sunday.
  • I forgot to edit my new Gutenberg homepage https://businessbloomer.com/ as it’s performing weirdly in relation to “bounce rate” after the update.
  • I’m flying to Torino/Turin tomorrow! I will present a talk in Italian about “How to Enjoy Freelancing”.
  • Just got a phone call that today one of the Sicilian marketplace vendors will upload his first products. apieceofsicily.com is still at zero products published but I’ll get there.
  • Finally I spent some of the blocked hours to re-do my CustomizeWoo course module 1 slides, so that I can start re-record the video lessons.
  • This week I coded a WooCommerce Checkout upsell for a client (€2 – €5 – €10 donation buttons) that on click add a donation product to the Cart.
