WooWeekly #600: WooCommerce Is Changing, and So Is My Job

Happy Wednesday!

And just like that, this is issue #600 of WooWeekly… whether you joined recently or have been reading for years, thank you for being here. What started as a simple WooCommerce newsletter somehow became a weekly habit shared by 20,000 builders, developers, founders, and merchants.

June is also here, which means I’ll be heading to Poland for WCEU tomorrow, before moving to the beach house for the summer next week.

And maybe that’s a good transition into this week’s topic, because lately I’ve been thinking a lot about how much my own work in WooCommerce has changed over the last year.

WooCommerce Is Changing, and So Is My Job

For the last 14 years, my work has revolved around WooCommerce. To say I know the platform inside and out would be an understatement 🙂

But as the platform evolves, so does the way we build our businesses. And when the platform changes, the opportunities change too.

Over the last few months, I’ve reviewed every revenue stream in my business with one simple question: what should I focus on for the next five years?

The product editor beta is being retired in WooCommerce 11.0

WooCommerce 10.9 will start the final deprecation window for the block-based product editor beta. The editor has been behind a feature flag for some time, and it will be removed from WooCommerce core in WooCommerce 11.0, currently scheduled for Tuesday, July 28, 2026.

Products and product data are not being removed or migrated. Stores will continue to use the classic product editor.

Introducing color swatches in WooCommerce core

Offering products with different colors is one of the most common uses of product attributes. Until now, however, WooCommerce core didn’t provide a visual representation of colors on the frontend, preventing merchants and shoppers from associating an actual color with an attribute term.

With WooCommerce 10.9, we are introducing a new product attribute type: Color / Image.

Keeping the WooCommerce GitHub backlog actionable

WooCommerce has been around long enough that some of our GitHub issues are old enough to have their own archaeology layer.

How the Pixel Manager tracks WooCommerce Subscriptions

Tracking subscriptions is harder than tracking one-off purchases, and not because of the code. It is hard because the ad platforms themselves disagree about what a subscription even is. Meta has a full lifecycle event model. Google Ads has nothing. GA4 sits somewhere in the middle.

A real WooCommerce store that runs subscriptions needs an implementation that respects what each platform actually accepts, and reports value in a way that reflects the customer lifetime value (CLV), not just the first month’s charge.
