WooWeekly #595: An Open Letter to WooCommerce

Hello there,

Welcome back to WooWeekly—where ~20,000 WooCommerce builders come each week for actionable tips, sharp insights, and the occasional strong opinion.

Well, Checkout Summit 2026 is almost over! While the in-person conference is now completed, I’ll be running the full event again remotely on May 7-8:  Checkout Summit {Reloaded}. 50+ Woo makers have already joined, and you should too. Here’s a 50% coupon discount for you: CW8AW4ZY (expires May 1st). The sooner you buy, the less you pay.

Anyhow, here comes your weekly round-up of WooCommerce tips and tricks. Enjoy!

An Open Letter to WooCommerce and the Woo Community

Dear WooCommerce,

If there’s one thing Checkout Summit confirmed for me, it’s that what we’ve built around Woo is bigger than software.

For 14+ years, I’ve been inside this ecosystem. Working with small, medium, and large clients, building products, teaching developers, solving merchant problems, speaking with agencies, and watching thousands of businesses choose WooCommerce as the engine behind their livelihoods.

You spend enough time in an ecosystem like this and you start to understand its rhythm—its strengths, its weaknesses, and the things that keep it moving.

Last week in Palermo, something happened that reminded me why this ecosystem still matters so much. Checkout Summit brought people into the same room to talk about Woo, face to face, for the first time since WooConf 2017. And walking away from it, I felt compelled to write this.

Because something important is happening.

The new Product Catalog Management in WooCommerce

This WooCommerce issue highlights something the ecosystem has been circling around for a while: the need for clearer, community-driven direction on core behaviour and developer expectations.

Following my open letter to Woo and the community, this feels like exactly the kind of concrete starting point where discussion can turn into action. Small, specific, and high-impact fixes like this are where alignment really matters.

Worth following and contributing if you care about where Woo is heading.

What WooCommerce Tasks You Should Automate

WooCommerce ships with almost no built-in automation by design. Out of the box, you get basic order status emails and a manual coupon system – and that’s about it. The extension marketplace lists hundreds of options, and most guides respond by dumping 15 categories in your lap without telling you which ones matter first.

If you’re completely lost about what to do, you need an entirely different approach: A prioritized sequence.

James Kemp is working on variation UX

“For years, the variation experience within WooCommerce has been far from ideal. As a user, you have to click between multiple tabs, reload the page, deal with attributes, generate variations in batches of 50. Once those variations are created, you still have the hassle of multi-page navigation, depending on how many variations you have. Really just an experience that’s very much lacking.

Our project aims to massively simplify this process without affecting the underlying data, so anyone can use the new process with the variations they already have. The goal is to bring it all into one tab, the variations tab, and make the creation and editing experience much more streamlined, with far fewer clicks to actually create and manage variations.”
